Richard Liu Qiangdong was born in Suqian town, Jiangsu province and his early life was the same as those of other families who lived in the region. His parents, who were coal shippers, were keen on instilling the value of hard work, besides giving him a proper education. They were always encouraging Qiangdong to excel in every area of his life. Upon the completion of his secondary school, Liu Qiangdong joined The Peoples’ University of China to study Bachelor’s degree in sociology. Qiangdong left Japan Life in 1998 to begin his entrepreneurial journey. When he started a small firm, named Jingdong at the time, it grew tremendously and within the first five years, he was already operating a chain of 12 brick and mortar stores. Liu did everything possible to stand out from his competitors. At a time where his competitor sold faux magneto-optical products, Qiangdong chose to sell authentic products only. Other tactics he used included the provision of exemplary customer service, simplifying transactions and utilizing technology to streamline business ventures. On his website, he continued to sell magneto products. However, other businesses saw the profitability of the business and offered partnerships so they could sell their wares on the platform. He renamed the company JD.com. Before long, Richard Liu welcomed new associations with companies such as Walmart with Google investing in his company.
